About NaN Gothic Big

NaN Gothic is NaN’s rendition of the Sans Serif genre that appeared and grew in popularity in the first half of the XXth century in the US of A. It embraces an almost vernacular approach, keeping all the warmth and the quirks but also the sturdiness that this everyday style carries. The results feels familiar, non pretentious, but very dynamic. This dynamism shows itself in many aspects: the sweeps in the letters /t and /y — echoing the tail of the /a — the 20° italic and backslant, the top-heavy /Ss and /Kk…

NaN Gothic is divided in 3 subfamilies: Big, UI and UI Mono. NaN Gothic Big, compact and impactful, is suited for larger text sizes, with its very tight spacing, big x-height. It sports 8 widths with 9 weights each, reaching extremes. It will shine in editorial contexts.

NaN Gothic UI keeps most of the identity but with looser spacing, smaller x-height and more open shapes. Tailored for setting long texts, it’s super legible and works incredibly well at tiny sizes. Its 3 widths allow to fine-tune how much space it occupies.

Inoue, a bandleader, drummer, and Electone keyboardist, specialized in leading sing-alongs at nightclubs in Sannomiya, the entertainment district of the city of Kobe. In 1970, he and six bandmates played instruments in fancy drinking establishments to accompany middle-aged businessmen who would sing traditional Japanese songs. He claimed to have first thought of the idea of a karaoke-style machine when he was asked by a prominent client to play for him on an overnight trip to an onsen. Not being able to do so, he instead provided a tape of his accompaniment to the client. Realizing its potential, he thought of merging these pre-taped accompaniments with a jukebox. Lacking the skills to make the machine himself, one of his bandmates introduced him to a friend who owned an electronics shop. He described his idea to him and commissioned 11 home-made machines which he called “8 Juke.” Each machine cost around $425 per unit and consisted of a box containing an amplifier, a microphone, a coin box, and a car stereo which used specially made 8-track tapes.

In 1970, Peter Schmidt created “The Thoughts Behind the Thoughts”, a box containing 55 sentences letterpress printed onto disused prints that accumulated in his studio, which is still in Eno’s possession. Eno, who had known Schmidt since the late 1960s, had been pursuing a similar project himself, which he had handwritten onto a number of bamboo cards and given the name “Oblique Strategies” in 1974. There was a significant overlap between the two projects, and so, in late 1974, Schmidt and Eno combined them into a single pack of cards and offered them for general sale. The set went through three limited edition printings before Schmidt suddenly died in early 1980, after which the card decks became rather rare and expensive.

Our Commercial License is based on a perpetual, worry-free model with no surprise costs. The key metric we use is the end-user’s company size as measured by employee count. Agencies are allowed to buy and use fonts on behalf of their end-user clients.

Our Pitch License offers access to complete, full-featured fonts for internal trial and pitch purposes only at a 70% discount. This allows you to test-drive and present our fonts in your mockups before project sign-off.

We offer an 80% discount to students and educators. Students may use licensed fonts for both school projects and commercial ones during and after their studies, as long as they work for companies with less than 6 employees. No I.D required, we trust you.

Our Charity and Social Enterprise License offers everything that our Commercial one does but for a 50% discount. The licensee must be a registered charity, non-profit or social enterprise.
